Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
I am Bob Gibson, President of the Rotary eClub of State of Jefferson. Welcome to this week’s meeting.
I hope this finds you well.
The Board of Directors of your eClub Foundation met this morning. We discussed how our Foundation could be used to respond to requests for support and react to urgent needs that arise from time-to-time. The Board approved the matching funds needed for our District Grant application supporting the literacy project with the Navajo Nation. The Board also approved support for two related literacy projects in Uganda. There was discussion related to support for Ukraine.
In addition to discussing specific projects, the Foundation Board discussed developing policies and guidelines for handling requests and responding to needs, as they arise. It is important to me that we maintain the integrity and credibility of our Foundation. It can be a valuable tool in getting projects, which you bring forward, off the ground. Bruce Garrett and Greg Brown have volunteered to put these policies together. This will be important work.
Mark your calendar! We are having another Member Meeting (Coffee Chat) this Saturday at 9:00 am PDT. We are fortunate to have Dan Smith as our program. He has traveled to Ukraine and developed important contacts among the Ukrainians. He will be giving us his firsthand observations and assessment of the challenges facing the Ukrainians. You will be receiving the link for this meeting in a separate email.
Thank you for your interest in our Club and your commitment to “Service above Self.”
Enjoy the meeting.
If you have any questions or comments, I am available. My e-mail address is: bob@bluewaterphoto.net.

Literacy Libraries and Child Reading Tents
Some children believe or have been told that they cannot be creative.

The eClub State of Jefferson is working on a unique literacy project in Uganda. For a very small investment, we can have a big impact on children’s lives.
The project is in two parts:
1. Reading Tents and
2. Supporting School Libraries.
The eClub Foundation is applying for a literacy grant of $500.00 to fund a portion of the total cost of $2,500.00. If you would like to help support this project please make a tax-free donation to the eClub Foundation and designate the Uganda Literacy Project. Thank you!
1. Reading Tents
“Through these reading tents, the children will benefit in different ways. For example, these will boost their confidence, more understanding, and application of generic skills that are very essential in this century.”
Concept Note for Children Reading Tents
Organizers: Tandi Reading Club
Project Title: Children’s Reading Tents
Project Aim: To support Children aged 5 – 17 years improve on their reading culture.
Project Location: Urban and Rural Uganda
Opportunities to be addressed:
1. Support children on how to decide or determine what to read
2. Give them ways on understanding what they read.
3. Applying what they read to their environment
Problem Analysis and Evidence:
Education empowers and improves skills such as literacy, numeracy, and cognitive ability. According to UWEZO Report, 2021 about the levels of literacy in the primary schools. The proportion of children fully competent in English reading for the whole set of grades P3-7, rose from 32.5% in 2018 to 39.5% in 2021, but the proportion of ‘non-readers’ increased.
Challenges are more with the accessing the reading materials, time to read them, understanding, and application.
Concept Focus
Through these reading tents, the children will benefit in different ways. For example, these will boost their confidence, more understanding, and application of generic skills that are very essential in this century.
Strategy:
Hear; Reading to these children will make them calm and boost their ability to listen to themselves and others.
Hand; Support the children in being practical and guide them on how their hands and legs can be more useful.
Head; Some children believe or have been told that they cannot be creative. Most of these are cultural.
Scope of work and expected deliverables.
- Content Preparation
- Coaching and Mentorship of the children
- Conduct coaching and mentorship sessions with them.
- Conduct feedback sessions with the children after every session.
- Support Personal Growth
2. Supporting School Libraries
“To support Teacher Librarians, attain effective ways of conducting a library lesson from primary one up senior two. These will nurture the reading culture.”
Below is a more detailed summary of these two programs. If you or your club are interested in more details or joining these projects, please contact club President Bob Gibson at bob@bluewaterphoto.net
Concept for Supporting School Libraries
Consultants: Tandi Reading Club
Project Title: Basic School Library Lesson
Project Aim: To support Teacher Librarians, attain effective ways of conducting a library lesson from primary one up senior two. These will nurture the reading culture
Project Location: Urban and Rural Uganda
Opportunities to be addressed:
1. Support teachers on effective ways of delivering literacy lessons
2. Improve on the activities’ that nurture the reading culture
3. Design modules that support this lesson
Problem Analysis and Evidence:
There is a library lesson scheduled for all classes as designed by the National Curriculum Development Centre of Uganda. This lesson is on all timetables in schools but most teacher librarians’ lack the knowledge of what happens during this lesson.
Concept Focus
Through the CPD (Continuous Professional Development), the teacher librarians will be equipped with the requisite skills to effectively navigate areas of improvement.
The teacher librarians will be able to find their SWOT (Strength, weakness, Threats and Opportunities). This supports teachers to “scope’ the actual area of intervention.
1.2 Design appropriate assessment of the children’s level of reading.
1.3 Choosing and Sorting out reading materials for various levels. (In terms of print etc.)
1.5 Show casing the teachers’ achievements (sharing of successes and addressing challenges.
Strategy:
- Frequent trainings
• Budding between teacher librarians
• Introduction of debating clubs
Scope of work and expected deliverables.
Observing of the library lesson:
- Content Preparation
- Coaching and Mentorship Session Delivery
- Conduct coaching and mentorship sessions with them.
- Support the teachers to design action plans on the changes they intend to make in their teaching methods, attitudes to help the children acquire literacy skills
- Field Visits
- Conduct feedback sessions with the teachers every after a field visit and give them assessment reports.
- Support Personal Growth

Pushing polio eradication to the finish line
This is a critical year for polio eradication efforts as Rotary and our Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners are aggressively working to interrupt transmission of the poliovirus in the remaining endemic countries and other areas.
Polio eradication is Rotary’s top humanitarian priority until we deliver on our promise to protect children everywhere from polio. We had the audacity to take on this mission, and we have the tenacity to finish the job.
How can you take action? Learn more and donate at endpolio.org
As we begin this journey together, I take inspiration from Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, who in the 18th century spoke of all the world becoming kin, promoting “Sense and Worth, over all the earth.” This has long been my call to action, and I share it now with you.
Let us build peace within and spread it freely. Let us create belonging and imagine the future of Rotary afresh. Let us work together joyously as we Create Hope in the World.
R. Gordon R. McInally
RI President, 2023-24

BIRDE'S FLOWN: Who was Nightbirde?
By Patrizia Rizzo and Jennifer Roback

SINGER-SONGWRITER Nightbirde stole the hearts of America in 2021 after receiving the golden buzzer on America's Got Talent.
After being forced to leave the show due to her treatments for metastatic breast cancer viewers were heartbroken.
Who was AGT star Nightbirde?
Nightbirde's real name was Jane Marczewski, and she sadly passed away in 2022 after losing her battle to cancer.
After sending in an audition tape to AGT the 31-yearold was invited to the show and wowed Simon Cowell and his fellow judges with her moving performance of an original song called It's Okay.
She instantly won over an emotional Simon who honored her with the coveted Golden Buzzer, while the other judges and the crowd gave her a standing ovation and rapturous applause.
The entertainer became an overnight sensation after her incredible audition with a video of her performance racking up over 30 million views on YouTube.
Simon told ET that he thought Nightbirde would have made it all the way_ if she stayed in the competition. The AGT judge said at the time: “would she have won tonight? I think she probably would, actually. "And I think she knows that deep down. "Having said that, she knows she made the right decision.”
What was her cause of death?
Nightbirde was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer that had progressed as time went on. She passed away on February 20, 2022, after the cancer reportedly spread to her lungs, spine, and liver.
In August 2021, the singer wrote alongside a black and white photo of herself: "Sharing my heart with the world on AGT has been an honor and a dream come true. My point of view this summer has been astounding.
"What a miracle that the pain I've walked through can be reworked into beauty that makes people all over the world open their eyes wider.''
She continued: "Since my audition my health has taken a turn for the worse and the fight with cancer is demanding all of my energy and attention.
"I am so sad to announce that I won't be able to continue forward on this season of AGT. "Life doesn't always give breaks to those that deserve it - but we knew that already." Nightbirde concluded: 'Thank you for all your support, it means the world to me. Stay with me, I'll be better soon. I'm planning my future not my legacy. Pretty beat up, but I've still got dreams."
Despite months of treatment Nightbirde passed away on February 20, 2022, after the cancer reportedly spread to her lungs, spine, and liver, according to TMZ, adding a month later that things had gotten "Pretty brutal."
What did Simon Cowell say about Nightbirde on America's Got Talent?
During an episode of America's Got Talent on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, Simon commented on the late Nightbirde. He reflected on the last time he spoke with her during the show. He said tearfully: ''The last time I saw her, she did say what that [Golden Buzzer] moment meant to her." The moment came after the judges went through their favorite Golden Buzzer moments from the show and Simon picked Nightbirde's audition as his favorite.
Was Nightbirde married and did she have any children?
Nightbirde was married to her husband Jeremy Claudio in 2015. They formally separated in 2020, and she moved from Tennessee to California following the split. Nightbirde did not have any children before she passed away, but she did have nieces and nephews through her siblings.
