Engaging our members?
In this month’s Rotary magazine, there is an article about our “youth” culture (Advanced in years). One of the points Frank Bures makes is:
“If we follow this process to the end, here’s where we find ourselves: believing that the process of living is one of inexorable decline, and that every day we are worth less than the day before until, at the end, we find ourselves with no value at all.”
Our club is made up of dedicated Rotarians who have committed the majority of their lives to “service above self.” We as a club honor them and look forward to an extraordinary future together.
Sometimes with the focus on “youth and diversity” that we’re experiencing, it can seem to disregard this service. The future of this club, any proposed trials, experiments, and changes must not only honor their service, but also enhance their lives.
One of our preeminent members recently lost his wife after a long period of decline. These are the people we need to keep in our minds as we strike out on our “Corp of Discovery.” What can we do to improve everyone's lives?
What do you think about this? When one of our member’s visits someplace, goes to a festival, experiences something from their native or adopted country. They record a video on their phone. Upload that video to the club members’ only area where we all can watch it, start a conversation, and share experiences. Using the technology that seems to separate us, to bring us closer together.
How about a place where we can ask and answer questions? Play games? Get deeply involved with our projects? Share with other clubs around the world? Build new friendships?
Maybe it’s a dream – maybe not. We won’t know until we try.
We have the tools, do we have the will?
